Everything you need to know about the exam!
The speaking exam lasts about 15 minutes and is usually done as a pair test. Teil 1 is Sich vorstellen (about 3 minutes), Teil 2 is Ein Alltagsgespräch führen (about 4 minutes), and Teil 3 is Etwas aushandeln (about 4 minutes), followed by the examiners’ decision time.
The examiner gives a topic and six cards. Each participant draws three cards, including one joker card with a question mark. Then both participants ask three questions and answer three questions on the same everyday topic.
Teil 3 is a small negotiation task. The official instructions describe it as “Etwas aushandeln”, and the detailed notes explain it as planning something together from different suggestions. In the model test, you must agree on two suitable activities for a new hobby.
The official examiner notes say candidates should speak with each other and react to each other’s questions and statements. Mutual support is evaluated positively, so natural interaction matters more than trying to sound perfect.
