DTZ exam guide

Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer A2-B1 Preparation

DTZ is designed for practical German in Germany. It focuses on communication you need for everyday life, work, authorities, education, housing, health, and integration-course completion.

Official exam facts

  • The Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer is a standardized German exam for CEFR levels A2 and B1.
  • It is the final language test of the integration course and checks German for everyday life in Germany.
  • The written exam lasts 100 minutes: listening about 25 minutes, reading 45 minutes, and writing 30 minutes.
  • The speaking exam is separate and tests everyday interaction, short monologue tasks, and planning together.

What is DTZ useful for?

Integration course completion

DTZ is the language-test part of the integration course final examination. Together with the Leben in Deutschland test, it can lead to the Integration Course Certificate.

Residence and official procedures

A B1 result in DTZ can be relevant when an authority asks for sufficient German language skills or an Integration Course Certificate. Always check the current rule with the local authority before booking.

Daily life and work in Germany

The exam topics are built around practical situations in Germany, including authorities, housing, education, work, health, services, and everyday communication.

Not a university admission exam

DTZ is not usually the target exam for German-taught university admission. Universities often request TestDaF, DSH, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, Goethe C1/C2, or another listed proof.

How to prepare by section

Hören

Listening practice

Train everyday spoken texts such as announcements, telephone messages, conversations, instructions, and practical public information.

Lesen

Reading practice

Practise signs, notices, ads, work schedules, school messages, product information, instructions, and short formal or informal communication.

Schreiben

Writing practice

Write practical letters or emails with a clear greeting, all required content points, suitable tone, and a closing.

Sprechen

Speaking practice

Prepare self-introduction, talking about experiences, answering follow-up questions, and planning something together without preparation time.

How the A2-B1 result works

A2 or B1 certificate

DTZ is a scaled exam. Depending on your results, the certificate can confirm A2 or B1 German skills.

Speaking is essential

For a B1 certificate, you need B1 in speaking and B1 in at least one written result area: Hören/Lesen or Schreiben.

Separate skill results

The results are determined separately for Hören/Lesen, Schreiben, and Sprechen, so weak and strong areas are visible.

Practical communication matters

DTZ rewards communication that works in real-life situations: clear answers, task completion, understandable grammar, and appropriate vocabulary.

What to practise first

  • Speaking: self-introduction, describing experiences, answering follow-up questions, and planning with another person.
  • Writing: practical letters or emails with greeting, clear content points, appropriate tone, and closing.
  • Listening and reading: everyday texts, public information, appointments, work, school, housing, health, and authorities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the exam!

DTZ means Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer. It is a standardized A2-B1 German exam developed for immigrants and used as the final language test in integration courses.

Yes. DTZ can produce an A2 or B1 certificate. For B1, speaking must be B1 and at least one written result area, Hören/Lesen or Schreiben, must also be B1.

It can be relevant when an authority asks for B1 German or an integration course certificate. Requirements can change, so check the current rule with your local authority.

DTZ test centers are BAMF-authorized integration-course providers. If you are not already in an integration course, ask BAMF or an authorized provider which booking route applies before assuming you can book it like a regular private certificate exam.

Usually no. DTZ is aimed at integration and everyday German. German-taught universities normally list specific academic language proofs such as TestDaF, DSH, telc C1 Hochschule, or Goethe C1/C2.

Speaking is especially important because the target level must be reached there. Also practise writing and Hören/Lesen so at least one written result area reaches your target level.
