Frequently Asked Questions

Both versions test reading, listening, writing, and speaking for academic German. The digital version uses more task types in reading and listening, has two writing tasks, and is completed on a computer. The paper-based version uses printed task booklets and has one writing task, while speaking is still recorded on a computer.

The TestDaF (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache) is a standardized German language exam for people who want to study at a German university. It focuses on academic and university-life communication in reading, listening, writing, and speaking.

The exam has four separately assessed parts: Lesen, Hören, Schreiben, and Sprechen. The official pure exam time is about 3 hours and 15 minutes, with breaks between exam parts. Exact task and item counts depend on whether you take the digital or paper-based version.

Each exam part receives its own TestDaF level: TDN 3, TDN 4, or TDN 5. There is no single overall score, so universities can set requirements for each individual skill.

Many German universities ask for TDN 4 in all four parts, but requirements vary by university and study program. Always check the admission rules for your specific program.

The official TestDaF certificate is valid indefinitely. Some universities may still ask for a recent language certificate, so it is worth checking directly with the institution.
