Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the exam!

The paper-based TestDaF Schriftlicher Ausdruck has one task and takes 60 minutes, plus about 5 minutes for instructions in the official model test. You write one connected, clearly structured handwritten text with graph description and argumentation. It is not split into several Teile.

You write about one specified topic. The official format asks you to use source material, describe and summarise graph information, make comparisons, discuss the issue, and justify your own position. Some tasks also ask you to refer to the situation in your home country.

The official model-test instructions recommend using no more than about 20 minutes for the graph description and no more than about 40 minutes for the argumentation. That is a guideline, not a separate exam part: your final answer should read as one coherent text.

In the paper-based TestDaF, only the text on the Schreibbogen is assessed. You may use the Konzeptpapier for notes or drafting, but notes and drafts are not graded. Write with a black or blue ballpoint pen and leave enough time to make the final text readable.

Trained TestDaF raters assess the text using official criteria. They look at the reader effect, whether the train of thought is clear, whether the text is well structured with transitions, whether the required writing actions are fulfilled, whether graph/source information is accurate, and how appropriate the vocabulary, grammar, and style are.

Do not write two disconnected mini-texts. Build one clear text: introduce the topic, describe the important graph information accurately, move into the discussion with a transition, justify your position, include the required home-country reference if asked, and finish with a short conclusion.
