The TELC B1 Mündlicher Ausdruck (Speaking) module takes approximately 15 minutes with a 20-minute preparation phase. • Teil 1: Einander kennenlernen (getting to know each other, ~3 min) • Teil 2: Gespräch über ein Thema (topic discussion with texts, ~6 min) • Teil 3: Gemeinsam etwas planen (collaborative planning, ~5 min) The exam is conducted as a pair examination with two examiners.
In Teil 1, you and your partner introduce yourselves and get to know each other (~3 minutes). • Topics on the card: Name, where you come from, how you live, family, where you learned German, what you do (school/job), languages • The examiners may ask additional questions about hobbies or weekends • Ask your partner questions back — interaction is key Useful phrases: "Wie heißen Sie?", "Woher kommen Sie?", "Ich lerne seit... Jahren Deutsch."
In Teil 2, you and your partner each receive a short text with a different opinion on the same topic (~6 minutes total). • Briefly summarize your text to your partner • Listen to your partner's summary • Discuss the topic: share your own opinion and personal experiences Useful phrases: "In meinem Text steht, dass...", "Ich bin der Meinung, dass...", "In meinem Heimatland ist das anders."
In Teil 3, you plan something together with your partner based on a situation and a note card with bullet points (~5 minutes). • Read the situation and discuss each planning point • Make suggestions, react to your partner's ideas, and find compromises • Agree on a common plan and divide tasks Useful phrases: "Ich schlage vor...", "Das ist eine gute Idee, aber...", "Einverstanden, dann mache ich..."
You get 20 minutes of preparation time before the oral exam. • Write down keywords for Teil 1 (your personal info) • Read your Teil 2 text carefully and note the main points • Read the Teil 3 situation and think of ideas for each bullet point Don't write full sentences — use keywords as prompts. You can bring your notes into the exam.
Practice with a partner regularly and focus on interaction. • Teil 1: Practice talking about yourself on all 7 card topics • Teil 2: Practice summarizing short texts and giving your opinion • Teil 3: Practice making suggestions, disagreeing politely, and finding compromises Remember: Examiners value natural interaction over perfect grammar. Use connectors like "weil", "deshalb", "aber", and "trotzdem" to show B1 level.
